I began Ceasefires in 2023 whilst living in Yirrkala, a Yolngu Indigenous community in far north Australia. The scroll was with me for the next two years and diarises my inner and external life with humans, animals, and environments in the Laynhapuy region aka Arnhem Land, other parts of Australia, and communities of South and North India.

A couple of weeks after I began this scroll, Israel set about annihilating whatever they had not yet destroyed of Palestine in the last century. The history of continued genocide and dispossession by Israel is something about which many people have been kept ignorant. The ensuing war was thus able to be sold as a righteous response to an out-of-the-blue guerilla-style attack. Why Israeli youth had chosen to celebrate themselves so close to so many who were living in such hell as a direct result of Israeli policy since mid last century is a question. Perhaps they also know nothing due to the cooked nature of Israel's history in school text books.

Perhaps a better question is how the rest of the world, myself included, and done nothing really, over all these years except drop bits of food, and march uselessly, and look on as a now a new and entirely calculated kind of holocaust has been perpetrated on the Palestinian people.
