Lungfish
Lungfish
Lungfish scroll. Detail. Watercolour on paper. 2011. 600cmx25cm (entire).
Lungfish scroll diarises five months in Pakistan. I made the scroll at a stage in my development with miniature painting when keeping the paper clean and unmarked felt important, as to follow the miniature canon.
I gave this importance up in time as I began carrying my scrolls around and making drawings from life.
After Lungfish the aesthetic of the scrolls changes as working exposed the paper to adversity. Later scrolls have crumpling, marks and stains, and other incidents. They are imperfect, lived-in. Allowing such cracks and fissures to enter a work and remain, in addition to the traces of drawings made from life, deviates from the miniature canon and is about sharing as much as possible the immediacies of life that inspire painting and this practice.
