Half Circle
Half Circle
Half Circle. Detail. Watercolour on paper. 1000cmx25cm (entire).
Half Circle began in August 2010 when I travelled from India to Pakistan after completing a Masters degree in fine art at Maharaja Sayajirao University, Baroda. After a month in Lahore I took a bus north to Baltistan and to Hunza Valley. I was lonely and cried into my scroll. Then I discovered that a friend was nearby, filming a television series on local culture and customs. He invited me and my scroll to come with his team on shoots where I could hover on the edges and draw. This was a beautiful, wonderful gift.
After five months the scroll and I travelled back to India, and then back to Australia. It was January and in Brisbane people were experiencing severe flooding, the like of which had not been seen for over one hundred years. The riverside suburbs flooded, but it was not the fault of the rains that so many homes became filled with mud, and with bewildered injured fish, and even crocodiles. For these had always been floodplains.
