The Rainbow Tent is opens a window into the life of Pakhiwas people through the eyes of two sisters, Kushi and Komal. With human rights an underlying theme, illustrations that incorporate found materials reflect Pakhiwas culture and ingenuity with repurposing waste materials.
I created sketches for the illustrations and gathered materials for their collage in 2019 whilst working as a documentarist for Slumabad School, a mobile education facility for Pakhiwas children in Lahore.
The Rainbow Tent has been designed as both storybook and tool for teaching primary aged children fine art and for introducing visual anthropology. The book offers lesson plans that the author has tried and tested as a teacher with Australian Primary children. Lessons include activities that allow children to explore techniques used to create illustrations such as drawing from life, painting, collage, and sewing.
There are also lesson plans for introducing concepts of applied and visual anthropology using films the author made with the subject community and which encourage an immersive understanding of the lifeworld of the people in this story.
